The University of Chester is a public research university in Chester, England. It began as a teacher training college in the United Kingdom in 1839 and later became the University of Chester. It was founded by forefathers such as William Gladstone and the Earl of Derby, as well as a former Archbishop of Canterbury. Throughout the twentieth century, the institution's student body grew, as did the variety and nature of its courses, which ranged from animation to zoo management. It now has five campus locations in and around Chester, one in Warrington, and a University Centre in Shrewsbury. It provides the foundation, undergraduate, and postgraduate courses, as well as academic research. AACSB, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Cathedrals Group, the North West Universities Association, and Universities UK are all members of the university. It has received the Silver Award from the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). The University of Chester is England's fifth oldest higher education institution, trailing only the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, and London.
