The University of York was founded in 1963 and has grown to comprise nine colleges, 30 academic departments and around 16,000 students. It is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research-led universities, and ranks in the top 150 institutions in the world, according to THE World University Rankings. York has also achieved a 14th overall ranking and 10th for the impact of its research in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. Additionally, the university has received thirteen Athena Swan awards for its support of women scientists. The main campus is located in the southeast of York, a short distance from the city's historic center, and has recently undergone a £750m expansion, adding new laboratories, teaching spaces, a sports village and a start-up incubator called Springboard.
