Course Description

The Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BEngTech) is a three-year engineering degree, offered in New Zealand as a study pathway into engineering, construction and related manufacturing industries. BEngTech students undergo a practice-based skills formation process, and the programme teaches students to understand and apply engineering science knowledge. Students will also develop the capability to analyse and implement solutions to real-life, practical situations. BEngTech graduates meet an industry need for people who can actively apply engineering knowledge in industry, and integrate that knowledge into high level practical situations. Students achieving this qualification may also move into a higher level of study. The Learning Outcomes of this programme are benchmarked against the Graduate Profile and Graduate Attributes of the exemplar Sydney Accord provisions of the International Engineering Alliance (IEA). This programme is 3 years full-time or part-time equivalent and fees for domestic students are $7,120 and for international students is $21,000. In Mechanical Engineering, students will have to study its strands-

  • Strength of Materials- Evaluate complex states of stress and the effects of dynamic loadings on a mechanical system. Design jointing systems. Analyse beam failure modes and calculate deflections and shear stresses. Calculate failure loads for concentrically loaded columns. Demonstrate an understanding of basic materials science chemistry

  • Materials Science- Describe and test properties of materials used in mechanical engineering. Describe and specify methods to change engineering material properties. Determine and apply selection criteria for engineering materials. Identify likely causes of material failure. Analyse thermodynamics principals for temperature, pressure, gas laws, thermal expansion, conservation of energy, change of phase, heating and thermal efficiency.

  • Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer- Apply thermodynamics principals to practical applications for refrigeration, heat exchanger, and solar collectors. Calculate rates of heat transfer through multiple layers and combined modes. Evaluate and compare the sources of energy in NZ including sustainability concepts.
