Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT) is the largest tertiary education institution in the province of Taranaki, New Zealand, it was established in 1972 and on 1 April 2020, WITT became a subsidiary of New Zealand Institute of Skills & Technology alongside the 15 other Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs). WIIT has two campuses around Taranaki; the main campus is situated in New Plymouth, and the other is located in Hawera. WITT is accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. WITT also has a campus in Hamilton which is part of the New Zealand Institute Highway Technology, WITT's wholly owned subsidiary. WITT offers programmes from Levels 1 to 9, including degrees and diplomas, apprenticeships and short courses. WIIT has more than 6,000 students.
WIIT conducts various researches and promotes several research institutions. The research committee at WIIT coordinates and monitors research conducted within the institute. The governing council of the institute is responsible for maintaining and managing the institute and its academic curriculum. WITT houses Taranaki’s only dedicated academic library with a collection of 30,000 print books, 40,000 electronic books and a wide variety of print and electronic journals, newspapers, magazines and recreational reading materials. WIIT’s Academic Service and library team provide guidance and support to ensure students’ academic success. They can assist students with getting organised to study, in carrying out research, accessing databases, assignment writing, note-taking, exam preparation, time management, referencing, computing, maths and course-related literacy and numeracy.
As the local hub of learning, WITT beleives in serving Taranaki. Their role is to cater to the needs of learners, to play their part in addressing national skills shortages, to keep talented people in the region, and to provide their key industries and local businesses the skilled workforce that they need.
