Edinburgh Napier University is a Scottish public university. The university's predecessor, Napier Technical College, was formed in 1964 and was named after the 16th-century Scottish mathematician and philosopher John Napier. Lord Douglas-Hamilton established the technical college into a university in 1992, naming it Napier University. The institution was renamed Edinburgh Napier University in 2009. The university is organised around three main campuses in Edinburgh: Merchiston, Craiglockhart, and Sighthill. It has about 19,500 students, including those who study on campus in Scotland as well as those who study on transnational programmes overseas and online. In 2018, there were more than 9,500 foreign and EU students from more than 140 countries.

In the Times World University rankings, Edinburgh Napier is ranked 601-800th. The QS Stars worldwide university rankings also give it five stars for teaching, internationalisation, and employability. The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021 named Edinburgh Napier as the top contemporary university in Scotland, while the 2020 National Student Survey put the institution first in Edinburgh for student happiness. The University was ranked first in the UK for adding value to students in The Guardian University Guide 2017. This score is computed by following students from enrollment through graduation and comparing their final degree award to their entering credentials.
In January 2011, the Sighthill Campus welcomed students from the School of Health and Social Care and the School of Applied Sciences. A five-story learning resource centre, 25 specialised teaching rooms, including clinical skills laboratories, three IT-enabled lecture theatres and seminar rooms, a clinical skills suite, and integrated sports facilities are all part of the campus. The campus has received BREEAM Excellent certification for excellent practices in sustainable design. A new sports facility on the Sighthill site contains a biomechanics laboratory and an environmental chamber that can reproduce high altitude settings with controlled temperature and humidity levels to simulate varied climatic conditions. The SRU Fosroc Scottish Rugby Academy Edinburgh moved into Sighthill's gym facilities in 2016.
The Business School is located on the Craiglockhart Campus. It includes the Craiglockhart Hydropathic Hospital buildings, which were once known as the Craiglockhart War Hospital and treated First World War poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. The Craiglockhart Campus features photography, poetry, film, and memorabilia to provide visitors with an insight into the thoughts of Craiglockhart's poets, patients, and medical personnel. This campus is home to the law and business programmes, as well as a convention centre. In 2004, the Craiglockhart Campus was completely renovated and expanded, and it now houses two lecture theatres, language labs, computing facilities, and a large library.
The Schools of Art & Creative Industries, Computing, Engineering & the Built Environment are located on the Merchiston Campus. It is built around the renovated shell of Merchiston Castle, the family residence of John Napier, the University's namesake.
