University of Hertfordshire

The University of Hertfordshire (UH) is a public university located in Hertfordshire, England. The institution is mostly located in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Hatfield Technical College, its forerunner, was formed in 1948 and was named one of the 25 Colleges of Technology in the United Kingdom in 1959. The British government gave Hatfield Polytechnic university status in 1992, and it was renamed the University of Hertfordshire. It is one of the universities founded after 1992. Hertfordshire's main campuses are College Lane and de Havilland. It has approximately 25,130 students as of 2021, including over 5,200 international students from 100 countries. With almost 2,700 employees, including 812 academics, the institution is one of Hertfordshire's major employers. Hertfordshire is a member of the University Alliance, Universities UK and European University Association. The university has 9 schools: Hertfordshire Business School, Computer Science, Creative Arts, Education, Health and Social Work, Humanities (which oversees its CATS programme), Hertfordshire Law School, Life and Medical Sciences, Physics, Engineering and Computer Science and Hertfordshire Higher Education Consortium. 

 

Hertfordshire University is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, which represents 535 universities from 37 Commonwealth nations. It was founded in 1913 and is the world's first and oldest international university network. It is also a member of the University Alliance, a network of British institutions founded in 2006 and given its current name in 2007. The University Alliance is a consortium of 'business engaged' institutions that promise to stimulate innovation and corporate growth via research and education. Its MBA programme is connected with the Association of MBAs, the world's only Accreditation and Membership Organization for MBAs.

 

The university offers over 800 undergraduate, postgraduate, CPD, online distance learning and short courses in its 9 schools of study, within which there are around 50 academic departments and 24 research centres-

Rankings-

The University of Hertfordshire is ranked 601–800 in the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. According to the Young University Rankings 2018, it is ranked 101-150. In terms of subject-specific rankings, it is ranked between 301 and 400 in Arts & Humanities in 2019. In 2018, it had a subject-specific international rating of between 150 and 200 in European Teaching. In 2019, the Complete University Guide listed UH courses in Food Science, Social Work, Optometry, Ophthalmology, and Orthoptics as among the top 20 in the UK. The University of Hertfordshire was ranked 71st in the THE 100 Under 50 Institutions 2015, a global ranking of the best 100 international universities under 50 years old.

 

Times Higher Education named it the Entrepreneurial University of the Year in 2010. The Complete University Guide placed it 41st among UK universities in 2011, its best regional position in recent years. Hertfordshire was placed 84th in the world in the Times Higher Education list of most international institutions in January 2015. Times Higher Education ranked it 122nd among the top 200 foreign institutions in the world in 2016. The rankings take into account teaching, research, citations, industry income, and worldwide orientation.  In the 2018 US News Best Global Institutions Ranking, Hertfordshire was rated 698th among universities worldwide. According to the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2018, the University of Hertfordshire is ranked 69, with an overall student satisfaction score of 75.5.

 

Campuses- 

College Lane and de Havilland are the primary campuses of the institution. It owns a BioPark facility, which is a scientific park maintained on behalf of the university by Exemplars. It also offers life science and health technology companies 6,000 square metres of laboratory and office space. There are now 27 permanent and virtual renters as of 2014. Its sporting facilities also include a pool and a climbing wall. It also features the Weston auditorium for cultural events, two art galleries, and one of the most well-known teaching observatories in the UK. Hertfordshire has about 25,130 students, including over 5,200 foreign students from over 100 countries, and a global alumni base of over 165,000.
