King's College London

King's College London (referred to as KCL) is an English public research university based in London. Under the patronage of King George IV and the Duke of Wellington, King's was founded by royal charter in 1829. In 1836, King's became one of the University of London's two founding colleges. It is one of England's oldest university-level institutions. In the late twentieth century, King's grew by merging with Queen Elizabeth College and Chelsea College of Science and Technology (in 1985), the Institute of Psychiatry (in 1997), the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, and the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery (in 1998). King's is frequently recognised as one of the best and most prestigious universities in the world. The Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association and the Russell Group are among the academic organisations that King's belongs to. Six Medical Research Council centres are located at King's, and the university is a founding member of the King's Health Partners academic health sciences centre, the Francis Crick Institute, and MedCity. It has the world's first nursing school, the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, and is the largest European institution for graduate and post-graduate medical instruction and biomedical research in terms of student numbers. King's is part of the "golden triangle" of institutions that are located in the cities of Oxford, Cambridge, and London. By virtue of its founding, King's has royal sponsorship. Queen Elizabeth II is the current patron. 14 Nobel laureates, as well as contributors to the discovery of DNA structure, Hepatitis C, the Hepatitis D genome, and the Higgs boson; pioneers of in-vitro fertilisation, stem cell/mammalian cloning, and the modern hospice movement; and key researchers who advanced radar, radio, television, and mobile phones, are among King's alumni and staff. Heads of state, governments, and international organisations are among the alumni, as are nineteen members of the current House of Commons and seventeen members of the current House of Lords, as well as three Oscar winners, three Grammy winners, and one Emmy winner.

King's College London has five campuses: the ancient Strand Campus in central London, three Thames-side campuses (Guy's, St Thomas', and Waterloo) nearby, and one in Denmark Hill in south London. It also has a presence in Shrivenham, where it offers professional military training, and in Newquay, Cornwall, where it operates an information service centre.

King's University has nine academic faculties, which are split into schools (for Social Science & Public Policy, Life Sciences & Medicine), departments, centres, and research divisions as of 2017. The most recent addition was King's Business School, which debuted in August 2017 and is housed at Bush House.

  • Faculty of Arts and Humanities- Traditional academic fields, as well as less-common subjects like Hellenic, Portuguese, and Medieval Studies, and emergent disciplines like Digital Humanities and Queer Studies, are all represented in the faculty.

  • Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences- The Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences (previously Dentistry Institute) is King's dental school, with an emphasis on disease prevention, and health enhancement, and function restoration. Guy's Hospital Dental School, King's College Hospital Dental School, Royal Dental Hospital of London School of Dental Surgery, and the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals have all been replaced by the institution. It was a component of King's School of Medicine and Dentistry until 2005 when the dental school changed its name to the Dental Institute, which was renamed in 2019.

  • Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine- The School of Medicine and the School of Biomedical Sciences merged in 2014, resulting in the formation of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine. The Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine has two schools of education: the GKT School of Medical Education is in charge of medical education and training for MBBS students, and the School of Bioscience Education is in charge of biomedical and health professions education and training. Basic & Medical Biosciences, Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, Cancer & Pharmaceutical Science, Cardiovascular Medicine & Sciences, Immunology & Microbial Sciences, Life Course Sciences, and Population Health Sciences are the seven schools that make up the faculty.

Chemistry, informatics, physics, mathematics, engineering, and telecommunications are among the fields in which the faculty offers teaching and research.

    • School of Education, Communication and Society
    • School of Global Affairs (Geography, Global Health & Medicine, International Development, Brazil Institute, India Institute, Lau China Institute)
    • School of Security Studies (Department of Defence Studies, Department of War Studies)
