University of Bolton

The University of Bolton (formerly Bolton Institute of Higher Education, Bolton Institute of Technology, or simply Bolton Institute) is a public university in the English town of Bolton, Greater Manchester. It has about 6,000 students and 700 academic and professional staff members. Around 70% of its students come from Bolton and the surrounding area. The University of Bolton dates back to 1824 when the Bolton Mechanics' Institute was founded. The Mechanics' Institute Committee decided in 1887 that the town's apprentices needed technical training for the rapidly expanding engineering advances being made at the turn of the nineteenth century. This resulted in the establishment of a new Technical School, with enrollment exceeding 1,500 students.

Bolton Technical School became a college in 1926. After fifteen years, a new building opened, offering a wide range of technical education options, with engineering being the most popular. Bolton Technical College and Bolton Institute of Technology were split into two separate institutions in 1964. A J Jenkinson was the first Principal of Bolton Institute of Technology and the Principal of the Technical College, Bolton College of Education (Technical). The merger of the Bolton Institute of Technology and the Bolton College of Education resulted in the formation of the Bolton Institute of Higher Education in 1982. John McKenzie was the first principal of BIHE, and he was succeeded by Bob Oxtoby. Oxtoby launched the campaign for university recognition. With the purchase of the former Eagle Factory in 1991, an £8.3 million extension project was launched. Bolton Institute was granted the authority to award taught degrees in 1992, followed by the authority to award research degrees in 1996.  Mollie Temple became the third principal in 1998 and successfully led the institution to university status in 2004.

The university also provides opportunities for research. Students can pursue masters and doctoral degrees. Bolton is well-known for its industry-relevant teachings and degree programmes. It provides well-known courses such as Business and Media programmes. Aside from that, the university has the Research & Graduate School (R&GS), which oversees all research students and any development done by researchers across the university. The school also assists research students in improving their research practice and making the most of the university's research opportunities.
