Manchester University is a public research university located in Manchester, England. The main campus is located on Oxford Road, south of Manchester City Centre. The University of Manchester is a red brick university, born out of the late-nineteenth-century municipal university movement. The Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) merged in 2004 to establish the current University of Manchester. This came after a century of collaboration between the two institutions. Manchester University is a member of the Russell Group, the N8 Group, and the International Universities Research Association. The University of Manchester has had 25 Nobel laureates among its past and present students and employees, the fourth-highest number of any single university in the United Kingdom. Research-

Manchester has a long history of being associated with high scientific achievement: the university and its constituent former institutions had a total of 25 Nobel laureates among their students and faculty, the third highest number of any single university in the United Kingdom and the ninth highest number of any university in Europe. Furthermore, two of the top ten discoveries by university professors and researchers were made at the university, according to an academic poll. The university was placed fifth in the UK in terms of research power and eighth for grade point average quality of staff contributed among multi-faculty institutions in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (tenth when including specialist institutions). The university was placed fifth in the UK in terms of research power and sixteenth in terms of grade point average quality of personnel submitted among multi-faculty institutions in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (seventeenth when including specialist institutions). Manchester is part of a "golden diamond" of research-intensive UK universities (adding Manchester to the Oxford–Cambridge–London "Golden Triangle"), with the sixth highest research income of any English university (after Oxford, UCL, Cambridge, Imperial, and King's College London).
