The University of Edinburgh is a Scottish public research university. It is one of Scotland's four ancient universities and the sixth-oldest university in continuous operation in the English-speaking world, having been granted a royal charter by King James VI in 1582 and officially opening in 1583. The university was instrumental in Edinburgh's rise to prominence as a major intellectual centre during the Scottish Enlightenment, earning the city the moniker "Athens of the North." It was previously known as Tunis College before being renamed the University of Edinburgh in 1583. In the same year, the university opened its doors for the first time. By the 18th century, it had become Scotland's best open institute. A medical school was built on the premises in 1875, and the halls were built in the medical buildings with funds donated by the then-famous politician, William McEwan. Anderson, the architect, designed and built the structure.
Edinburgh receives over 60,000 undergraduate applications per year, ranking it second in the UK in terms of application volume. With 35,375 students in 2019/20, it is the eighth-largest university in the UK by enrolment. In 2019, Edinburgh had the seventh-highest average UCAS point total among British universities for new entrants. The university maintains ties to the British royal family, with Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh serving as chancellor from 1953 to 2010 and Anne, Princess Royal serving as chancellor since March 2011. The university belongs to several research-intensive university associations, including the Coimbra Group, League of European Research Universities, Russell Group, Una Europa, and Universitas 21. It had a total income of £1,175.6 million in the fiscal year ending 31 July 2021, of which £324.0 million was from research grants and contracts, and the third-largest endowment in the UK, trailing only Cambridge and Oxford. The university has five main campuses in Edinburgh, including many historical and architecturally significant buildings such as those in the Old Town.
