Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is the largest public Tertiary Education Institution at the Top of the South Island in New Zealand, it was formerly known as the Nelson Technical School, and it was established in the year 1904. Formerly, it offered courses like plumbing, commerce, craft, secretarial and engineering. It formed a merger with the Nelson College in 1930, giving way to providing several more and new vocational and part-time courses to its students. It was only in 1971, that Nelson Polytechnic became an independent technical institute. NMIT's main campus is in Nelson with other campuses in Blenheim, Marlborough, Woodbourne and Richmond. NMIT offers 100 programmes at certificate, diploma or degree level across a broad range of areas and has a yearly enrollment of around 3,000 equivalent full-time students, locally, nationally and internationally. NMIT is an NZQA approved Category 1 tertiary education provider and ISO 9001 certified. The Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) offers two scholarships to international students, namely the NZ$3000 Bachelor's Degree Scholarship and English Language Pathway Scholarships.
On 1 April 2020, NMIT was subsumed into the New Zealand Institute of Skills & Technology alongside the 15 other Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs). In the academic year of 2018, the total student enrolment of this institute was 7,218. In this figure, the number of international students was 1,357. In the same year, the percentage of female students measured to be 53.30%, and the male student percentage measured 46.70%. In 2018, the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology had 136 academic staff and 154 administrative/business support staff. Recently, the graduates of this institute were honoured with 25 years of the NMIT degree. This institution takes pride in celebrating the success of its alumni.
Since the region's economy includes New Zealand's largest concentration of fisheries, wine and aquaculture, NMIT has substantial forestry, horticulture, aviation, tourism and art industries as well as a sizable conservation estate, including three national parks and has also developed programmes that sustain the region's infrastructure as well as specialized programmes in niche areas. NMIT is a government-funded institution and is authorized by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and at present offers courses in several disciplines, including arts, engineering, business, computing & information technology, social sciences, writing, and tourism, Viticulture, Aquaculture, Nursing, Maritime, Adventure Tourism, Creative Industries, Business and Computing. It also delivers a wide range of trade qualifications.
This institute has two campuses, situated in Blenheim and Nelson, New Zealand. The Nelson Campus is located in the centre of Nelson city, and is near many shopping centres and entertainment spots and provides many amenities to the students, including a sports court, parking facilities, accommodations, learning centres, and childcare facilities. Additionally, this campus is open to the public and caters to them with facilities such as the Beauty Zone and the Rata Room. The Marlborough Campus is home to programs like viticulture, wine-making, and aviation, and students can avail of facilities such as proximity to cafes, a world-class wine research centre, and a library. In the year 2006, the institute leased its Richmond Campus to Skills Update Training Institute.

The NMIT winery and laboratories are situated within the Wine Research Centre - part of the Marlborough Research Centre (MRC) and include two laboratories, winery, multimedia presentation theatre and research vineyard. Has facilities like the Library, Student Centre, Free Campus-wide wi-fi, Computer suites, Recreational facilities and Childcare Childcare facilities.
