CQ University is a public university, initially established in 1967 as the Queensland University of Technology, CQ University got its university status in 1992 and in the same year was named the Central Queensland University, later in 2008 with the universities’ expansion it became known as CQ University. The university is based in central Queensland and is the only Australian university with a campus presence in every state, with its main campus being at Norman Gardens in Rockhampton and other campuses located in- Wayville in Adelaide, Brisbane, Branyan in Bundaberg, Cairns, Emerald, Gladstone (SOuth Gladstone and Callemondah), Mackay, Melbourne, Noosa, Perth, Rockhampton City, Sydney and Townsville. CQ University also supports distance education in Biloela, Broome, Busselton, Charters Towers, Karratha and Yeppoon, and partners with university centers in Cooma, Geraldton and Port Pirie. In 2013 CQ University was awarded five stars for online delivery, internationalization and access in its first foray into the global university ratings QS Stars. It also scored a 4 for teaching and for facilities. In 2012, CQ University lifted its rankings in the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) audit from 28 (in 2010) to 21.

The University provides for research, postgraduate and undergraduate degree, as well as short term and certificate programs, with courses like education and humanities, accounting and law, community services, apprenticeships, trades and training, psychology, health, performing and visual arts, social work, IT and digital media, science, and environment, and many more being offered.

The university is also a partner in the Queensland Centre for Social Science Innovation (QCSSI) together with the Queensland State Government, University of Queensland (UQ), Griffith University (GU), Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and James Cook University (JCU).
