James Cook University - Australia

James Cook University (JCU) is an Australian public university in North Queensland. JCU, Queensland's second-oldest university, is both a teaching and research institution. The main campuses of the university are in the tropical cities of Cairns and Townsville, as well as one in the city-state of Singapore. JCU has campuses in Mount Isa, Mackay, Thursday Island, and Rockhampton. Russo Higher Education operates a Brisbane campus that offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses to international and domestic students. Environmental sciences, biological sciences, mathematical sciences, earth sciences, agricultural and veterinary sciences, technology, and medical and health sciences are among the university's primary research areas. JCU's student population was 17,001 in 2021, with 4,289 international students. The university admitted its first medical students in its newly formed School of Medicine in 2001. In 2006, the university added an undergraduate veterinary degree for the first time, and in 2009, the Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme began. Today, the university offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in science, including marine biology and environmental science, as well as arts, humanities, social work, business, law, and governance, creative media, education, engineering, and planning, healthcare, rehabilitation, and psychology, medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy, public health, and veterinary science. There are numerous courses available online. James Cook University joined Innovative Research Universities Australia in 2007. (now called Innovative Research Universities). Innovative Research Universities (IRU) is a network of seven comprehensive universities dedicated to conducting nationally and internationally recognised research.

Campus Information

JCU's Cairns, Nguma-bada campus is located in Smithfield, 15 kilometres north of Cairns' central business district. JCU relocated from its original inner-city location to this location in 1995. JCU Cairns, Nguma-bada campus, Smithfield, has approximately 3,000 students, including 335 international students. The Australian Tropical Herbarium, JCU Dental, and The Cairns Institute are all located on campus grounds. The JCU Ideas Lab will be finished in July 2020. The $30 million environmentally friendly building brings together students, faculty, and community entrepreneurs to advance the Internet of Things Engineering and data science. JCU Cairns' Bada-jali campus is located in the CBD of Cairns. The campus provides a wide range of innovative facilities and services to the university.

JCU Cairns, Nguma-bada Campus, Smithfield

JCU's Townsville, Bebegu Yumba campus is the university's largest and is located on 386 hectares in the Douglas suburb, near the army base and Mount Stuart's lee. Originally located in the Pimlico suburb, the university relocated to its current location in 1967. JCU Townsville's Bebegu Yumba campus is home to over 10,000 students, including over 1,300 international students. The Townsville Hospital is located next to the university. The JCU Townsville City campus opened in 2015 on Flinders Street in Townsville's CBD. The campus offers a wide range of cutting-edge facilities and services to the university, businesses, and community organisations.

JCU Townsville, Bebegu Yumba Campus, Douglas

The Singapore campus of James Cook University (JCUS) was established in 2003. James Cook University Singapore relocated to 149 Sims Drive in January 2015, closing down its previous campus on Upper Thomson Road, where it had been operating since July 2008. JCU Singapore had 3644 students in 2020. International and domestic students can take courses in business, education, information technology, psychology, environmental science, tourism and hospitality. JCU Australia accredits all degrees conferred. In contrast to its parent institution in Australia, James Cook University Singapore is classified as a private institution under the Private Education Act of the Ministry of Education and is accredited by both EduTrust and the Council for Private Education.
