The Swinburne University of Technology (abbreviated Swinburne) is an Australian public research university based in Melbourne, Melbourne. George Swinburne established the Eastern Suburbs Technical College in 1908 to serve those in Melbourne's eastern suburbs who lacked access to further education. Its main campus is located in Hawthorn, a Melbourne suburb 7.5 kilometres from the city's central business district. In addition to its main campus in Hawthorn, it has campuses in the Melbourne metropolitan area at Wantirna and Croydon, as well as in Sarawak, Malaysia, and Sydney. Swinburne Online is the university's online presence. Swinburne Online was established in 2011 as a 50/50 joint venture between Swinburne University of Technology and SEEK Learning to meet the growing demand for online education. Swinburne Direct was the original name for Swinburne Online, which was founded with a $10 million investment. It was founded to take advantage of the Australian government's decision to loosen limitations on Commonwealth-funded university spaces beginning in 2012, to increase the number of 25- to 34-year-olds with bachelor's degrees to 40% by 2025. Swinburne Online began as a provider of bachelor's and master's level higher education degrees. It offers over twenty courses in business, communication, design, education, and social science as of April 2015.
Swinburne has a student body population of 57,811 students and 2,777 staff members. Swinburne University is a dual-sector university that provides higher education as well as Pathways and Vocational Education (PAVE). Swinburne provides courses in a wide range of disciplines, and our close ties with the industry provide students with valuable work experience during their studies.

Swinburne's main campus is at Hawthorn. It offers a variety of vocational, undergraduate, and graduate programmes.
Wantirna is a TAFE-only campus. Courses are also available on the campus in areas such as health and community services, visual arts, business, and accounting.
The Croydon campus of the University of Technology is a TAFE-specific campus, with a focus on training in trades such as building, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing.
The Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus is located in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.
