Monash University is a public research university based in Melbourne, Victoria, founded in 1958 and is the second oldest university in Victoria and was named after the prominent World War I General, Sir John Monas The university is a member of Australia’s Group of Eight research universities, as well a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL) and the only Australian member of the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers, Universities and National Academies. Monash University is one of the Australian universities to be ranked in the École des Mines de Paris (Mines ParisTech) ranking on the basis of the number of alumni listed among CEOs in the 500 largest worldwide companies and ranks consistently among the world's top 55–70 universities in the QS World University Rankings. With more applicants than any other university in the state of Victoria, Monash University is home to more than 54,361 undergraduates and 28,701 post-graduate students including 27,403 international students.

The university has a number of campuses, four of which are in Victoria (Clayton, Caulfield, Peninsula, and Parkville), and one in Malaysia. The first and largest campus of Monash University is located in Clayton city, Melbourne, and the campus houses the faculties of Engineering, Law, Arts, Business and Economics, Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Education, Science and IT. Other campuses of the university are Caulfield Campus which is the 2nd largest campus after Clayton, the Peninsula campus which is home to numerous faculties like Physiotherapy, Occupation Therapy, and Psychology, Health Science and Nursing. As well as a research and teaching centre in Prato, Italy, a graduate research school in Mumbai, India and a graduate school in Suzhou, China. Monash University courses are also delivered at other locations, including South Africa is based by Monash University.

Monash University also has the Monash Law School, the Australian Synchrotron, the Monash Science Technology Research and Innovation Precinct (STRIP), the Australian Stem Cell Center, Victorian College of Pharmacy, and 100 research centres, as well as 17 cooperative research centres. It has 109 research centres located within the campus and more than 3,000 research articles are produced by the staff every year. The discovery of Relenza (Anti-influenza drug) and the development of an anti-malaria drug being two of the most important research achievements of Monash University.

Monash University has various colleges ranging from the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Faculty of education, Faculty of Information technology, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Law, Monash University Art Design & Architecture, Monash Business School, School of Biomedical Sciences, mBio Graduate School, Department of Physiotherapy, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Fine Arts, to Clinical Sciences at Monash Health. With more than 15 streams being offered, namely- Science, Business & Management Studies, Humanities & Social Sciences, Engineering, Medicine & Health Sciences, Law, Teaching & Education, Arts (Fine / Visual / Performing), IT & Software, Mass Communication & Media, Nursing, Design, Accounting & Commerce, Architecture & Planning, Banking, Finance & Insurance and Hospitality & Travel among others.
