The University of Newcastle (UON), also known as Newcastle University, is an Australian public university in Newcastle, New South Wales. It was founded in 1965 and had its primary campus in the Newcastle suburb of Callaghan. Additionally, the university has campuses in Ourimbah, Port Macquarie, Singapore, Newcastle CBD, and Sydney CBD. The NSW parliament granted autonomy to the University of Newcastle in 1964. It became an independent university in 1965 and is now ranked among the world's top 200 universities. Since its inception, the University's faculty, students, and leaders have introduced novel ways of thinking and operating that have resulted in remarkable results. The university currently has 37,946 students enrolled, including over 7,399 international students from 113 countries.
According to the QS World University Ranking 2022, the University of New Castle has been ranked as one of the top 200 universities in the world. Additionally, 15 subjects of UON ranked in the top 200 in the world in the QS World University Ranking by Subject 2021, and the Top 8 in Australia for research 'well above world standard' according to the Excellence in Research, Australia 2018. UON has also been awarded the NO. 1 University in Australia for Indigenous enrolments by the Department of Education, Selected Higher Education Statistics- 2019 Data and has ranked 30th in the world for impact by Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, 2022.
The Callaghan campus is the main and largest campus of the university. It's in the Newcastle suburb of Callaghan, about 12 kilometres (7 miles) from the city centre. The campus is built on 140 hectares (346 acres) of natural bushland, which houses the university's numerous buildings. Many university operations, including student administration, course and degree programme planning, and the university's Teaching and Learning division, are based on the Callaghan campus. The campus is home to all of the major colleges. The Auchmuty and Huxley libraries are also accessible from the campus. Other amenities on campus include several sporting fields, a sports and aquatic centre, and five on-campus residential colleges (Edwards Hall, International House, Evatt House, Barahineban and the recently built New Residences). Newcastle Business School's business and commerce programmes on the Callaghan campus are AACSB International-accredited.
Ourimbah Campus is a multi-institutional campus that includes the University of Newcastle, TAFE NSW – Hunter Institute, and the Central Coast Community College. It is situated on the traditional lands of the Darkinjung people in the Central Coast suburb of Ourimbah. The faculties of business and law, education, arts, science, and health are all represented on campus. They offer sixteen undergraduate degree programmes and one postgraduate programme in total, five of which are unique to the campus. Newcastle Business School's Bachelor of Commerce programme at the Ourimbah campus is AACSB International accredited.
On the TAFE NSW – North Coast Institute Port Macquarie campus, the University of Newcastle has a presence. The campus is situated on the Birpai people's traditional lands. On-campus, the university offers three-degree programmes, including one of the university's enabling programmes, Open Foundation.
The Singapore campus is the university's first overseas campus, and it includes both the Delta and Henderson campuses of PSB Academy in Singapore's Central Region (Tiong Bahru). This new campus, located behind Tiong Bahru Plaza, is 19,000 square metres (204,514 square feet). Newcastle Business School's undergraduate Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Commerce programmes, as well as the Master of Business Administration programme offered through the UoN Singapore campus, are AACSB International-accredited.
