The University of Adelaide is a public research university based in Adelaide, South Australia and was established in 1874 making it the third oldest university in Australia. The university's main campus is located on North Terrace in the Adelaide city centre, adjacent to the Art Gallery of South Australia, the South Australian Museum and the State Library of South Australia. The university has four campuses, three in South Australia: North Terrace campus in the city, Roseworthy campus at Roseworthy and Waite campus at Urrbrae, and one in Melbourne, Victoria. All four campuses are situated close to restaurants and cafes, medical stores, and many other shops that provide basic necessities to the students. Also, the North Terrace campus includes accommodation for the students as well as faculty members. The campus also comprises the famous Barr Smith Library. The university also operates out of other areas such as Thebarton, the National Wine Centre in the Adelaide Park Lands, and in Singapore through the Ngee Ann-Adelaide Education Centre.

 

The university offers undergraduate degree programs, postgraduate degree programs and specialized degree programs. It is a member of the Group of Eight and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The university is also a member of the Sandstone universities, which mostly consist of colonial-era universities within Australia. The university is associated with five Nobel laureates, constituting one-third of Australia's total Nobel Laureates, and 110 Rhodes scholars. The University of Adelaide consistently features in the top 150 international universities as ranked by the Academic Ranking of World Universities, the QS World University Rankings, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and the U.S. News & World Report, situating it securely in the top 1% of ranked universities worldwide. The university's natural sciences, veterinary sciences, nursing, and life sciences and medicine, in particular, are ranked in the top 100 in the 2020 QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020.

 

The University currently enrolls in excess of 27,300 students, including over 7,400 international students (2015) from more than 100 countries. Adelaide University has approximately 130,000 Alumni worldwide, along with 400 student exchange agreements. The university has been associated with many notable achievements and discoveries, such as the discovery and development of penicillin, the development of space exploration, sunscreen, the military tank, Wi-Fi, polymer banknotes and X-ray crystallography, and the study of viticulture and oenology and is a member of Academic Consortium 21, an association of 20 research intensive universities, mainly in Oceania, though with members from the US and Europe.

The University of Adelaide's main campus is the site of most teaching and research facilities. Set in the heart of Adelaide, the University offers excellence in its educational and social facilities.The University wishes to acknowledge the Kaurna people, the original custodians of the Adelaide Plains and the land on which The University of Adelaide’s campuses at North Terrace, Waite and Roseworthy are built.

North Terrace

The University of Adelaide’s Roseworthy campus is a vibrant hub of undergraduate teaching, postgraduate training, research and clinical services.With an international reputation for excellence in dryland agriculture, natural resource management and animal production, the campus is now the major centre for South Australia’s animal and veterinary science research. Roseworthy campus is located on a 1600 ha property 50 kilometres north of Adelaide and includes a working farm on which students gain practical experience and training.

The University of Adelaide's Waite campus is home to the largest concentration of agriculture and wine research and teaching expertise in the Southern Hemisphere.Here, the Waite Research Precinct (The Waite) is a hive of complementary organisations and centres engaged in world-class research and development in plant biotechnology, cereal breeding, sustainable food and agriculture, wine, horticulture and natural resource sciences. Named in honour of Peter Waite, the Waite Agricultural Research Institute was established on the site in 1924 following the bequest of Urrbrae House and 300 acres from Mr Peter Waite to the University of Adelaide. The objective of the bequest was "to advance the cause of education and more especially to promote the teaching and study of Agriculture and Forestry and allied subjects". The campus is located on 184 hectares in the Adelaide foothills with views to the sea and the city. It is located at Urrbrae, seven kilometres south east of North Terrace campus and the Adelaide CBD.

The Waite

The facilities at Thebarton are a vital link between the University of Adelaide and Australian business and industry. It hosts a number of University research activities in the areas of mechanical engineering, physical sciences, electronic engineering, and chemical engineering. It is also home to the gymnasium run by The University of Adelaide Sports Association.
