University of Southern Queensland

The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) is a medium-sized regional university with three university campuses in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. It provides classes in law, medicine, engineering, science, business, education, and the arts. The Darling Downs campus of the Queensland Institute of Technology was established in 1969. In 1970, the institution offered study programmes for rural Queenslanders and international students. It was renamed the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education in 1971, the University College of Southern Queensland in 1990, and the University of Southern Queensland in 1992. It has three research institutes and seven research centres that work on a variety of business, agricultural, scientific, environmental, and technological issues. Full-time and part-time students from Australia and other countries make up the University's student body. According to the results of the 2013 International Student Barometer survey, USQ was named the top university in Australia for international student satisfaction that year. Students at USQ come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and speak a variety of languages. In 2015, the University had approximately 28,203 students, of which approximately 84 per cent were domestic students, 16 per cent were international students, 15.8 students per staff member, and 1.17 females to males student ratio.

 

Over 700 specialised professional degree programmes are available at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels at the university. The university is divided into two faculties, each with six schools that offer programmes in business, management, education, law, arts, commerce, humanities, health and nursing, engineering, sciences, communication, and creative arts. USQ has a separate college for indigenous education and research for Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginal people. The university's Open Access College offers a number of special programmes that will provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for academic success. In addition, it offers over 100 online programmes to help working professionals learn on their own time. It has a total student enrollment of 27,563, with students from over 94 countries represented. The university employs approximately 1573 administrative personnel.

Campus Information

USQ Toowoomba is located near the Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport and is about a two-hour drive from Brisbane. The School of Business Phoenix Building on campus houses lecture theatres and syndicate rooms. Science, creative arts and media, business and commerce, engineering and built environment, education, health and community, information technology, humanities and communication, law and justice, English language programmes, and pathway programmes are all available on campus. At the Clive Berghofer Rec Center, there is a theatre, science laboratories, Olympic standard basketball courts, a 24 hour-access gym with high-tech equipment, a tennis centre, an aerobics centre, and netball courts, as well as social clubs and other accommodations. It is home to the country's largest Japanese-style garden (the Ju Raku En) as well as the Gumbi Gumbi gardens. McGregor, Steele Rudd, and Concannon are three co-educational residential colleges on this campus.

Toowoomba Campus

USQ's Springfield campus is in Springfield, a suburb about 30 kilometres (19 miles) southwest of Brisbane CBD, one hour from the Gold Coast, and about 20 minutes from Ipswich CBD. Springfield's public transportation system includes bus services as well as a return train to Brisbane's CBD. The campus, which serves as a hub for digital production and performance, includes a radio station, science and engineering laboratories, a television studio with rehearsal spaces, collaborative teaching rooms, a fitness and recreation centre, an auditorium, and on-campus housing. The campus flight simulator allows aviation students to simulate both normal and abnormal flight scenarios using checks and procedures used by airline pilots.

Springfield campus

USQ Ipswich is located in southeast Queensland's growing region, 40 minutes from Brisbane's CBD. The campus is home to USQ's health programmes, which include clinical nursing laboratories, custom-built training facilities for paramedicine students, a café, a gym, and various sports fields. Nursing, paramedicine, psychology, and counselling degrees, as well as tertiary preparation programmes, are available at USQ Ipswich. The campus also includes a library with rainforest and water features to improve air quality and enhance the learning environment
